Transfer Station Improvements on Schedule for 2027 Completion

Grand Island, Neb. — Construction continues on the City of Grand Island's new Transfer Station facility, a major infrastructure investment designed to improve efficiency, increase capacity and better serve the community for decades to come.

The upgraded facility is expected to be substantially complete and available for public use in early 2027. Located at 5050 West Old Potash Highway, the existing Transfer Station was built in 1981 and has experienced significant growth in demand over the past several decades. Since 2000, customer visits have increased by 173% while the amount of material processed has grown by 124%, creating the need for a larger, more modern facility.

The project includes construction of a new waste dumping facility, upgraded truck scales, expanded office space and improved traffic flow for customers and commercial haulers. Once complete, the new facility will provide a safer, more efficient experience while increasing the City's ability to meet future solid waste needs.

"It will have six unloading bays compared to our current four unloading bays," Solid Waste Superintendent Jeff Wattier said of the new facility. "The new upgrade will obviously help with the traffic congestion for customers inbound and outbound on the scale, but with it having 50% more unloading bays for the customer with the new design of the new facility, it will be quicker cycle times for loading our trailers that then haul it to the landfill.”

Planning for the project began with a comprehensive operational study that evaluated traffic patterns, facility needs and long-term capacity requirements. Over several years, the City worked with SCS Engineers to complete engineering design, geotechnical investigations, permitting and construction planning.

In October 2025, the Grand Island City Council awarded the $7.53 million construction contract to RMV Construction, LLC of Kearney. Construction management and inspection services are also being provided by SCS Engineers throughout the project. The existing Transfer Station will remain operational during construction, and City officials appreciate the public's patience as work progresses. Additional updates will be provided as construction advances toward completion in early 2027.

City officials also remind residents that the Grand Island Transfer Station no longer accepts yard waste or other green waste. Residents should take limbs, brush, leaves and other landscape materials to the Landscape Depot, located at 366 N. 80th Road. The Landscape Depot can be reached at (308) 390-1586 for questions regarding accepted materials and hours of operation.
