Northwest Hoops Fall To Beatrice

(Grand Island, NE) - A long week would come to an for the Northwest basketball teams on Friday night as both Viking teams would fall in defeat to Beatrice. The Lady O claimed the girl's game 63-46. The Orangemen would take down the Viking boys 60-50. 

In the girl's contest, Northwest would trail at the halftime break by 13 points, 30-17. The Vikings would try to mount the comeback in the third quarter outscoring Beatrice 22-6 to trail 36-29 after three quarters. The Vikings would continue to hang in the game the first three minutes of the fourth quarter as Jolie O'Hara would hit a three-pointer to cut the deficit to four, 43-39, but that would be as close as the Vikings would get. Beatrice would end up closing the game in the fourth quarter 27-17. Beatrice with the win is now 17-3 on the season. Northwest slips to 10-10 and will be back in action on Monday, February 12th at North Platte. The Viking girls will end the regular season on Friday, Feb. 16th hosting Elkhorn North. 

The boy's game would see an incredible individual effort from six-foot senior of Beatrice, Crew Meints, as he would end the game with 37 points. Meints would have 19 of the 29 first-half points for the Orangemen but Northwest would only trail by five at the halftime break, 29-24, getting 11 points in the first half from freshman Dawson Urbanski who ended the game with 20. The third quarter would go back and forth with Beatrice holding a 17-15 advantage in the quarter to hold a score of 46-39. Beatrice would then score 14 points in the fourth compared to the 21 from Northwest to secure the 10-point victory. Much like the girl's game Northewest in the boy's contest did cut the deficit to four in the fourth quarter. Northwest trailed 50-46 at the 3:58 mark, but that also like the girl's contest would be as close as they would get to the Beatrice lead. Beatrice with the win is now 8-11. Northwest falls to 7-12. The Viking boys will also be back in action on Monday, Feb. 12th at North Platte. The Northwest boys will host Mt. Michael on Tuesday, Feb. 13th, and round out the season vs Elkhorn North on Friday, Feb. 16th.
