Northwest Basketball Teams Pick Up Wins At Adams Central


(Hastings, NE) - The Northwest basketball teams would hit the road Friday night to Adams Central. The girls game would see the Vikings winning 56-24. The contest would go back and forth early. Northwest would take a 7-6 lead just before the 2:30 minute mark left in the first quarter. The Vikings would force a timeout with a three-pointer to make it 10-7 which would force an Adams Central timeout. Northwest would then hit the gas and never look back. Northwest would only give up three points in the 2nd quarter to lead at the halftime break 25-9. The Vikings would lead 45-18 at the end of the third quarter. Reagan McIntyre would lead the way with 13 points followed by Jolie O'Hara with 12 points, and Daveigha Heikes with 10 points. Northwest girls are now 9-4 on the season. Adams Central is now 6-5 on the season and back in action Saturday, January 18th at Doniphan Trumbull. 

The boy's game would be a teeter-totter affair going back and forth all night. The Vikings would pull out a 62-60 win over the Patriots. The Vikings would have a four-point lead at the end of the 1st quarter, 16-12. Northwest would trail two different times by six in the 2nd quarter. Dawson Urbanski would knock in two free throws at the tail end of the 2nd quarter as Northwest would only trail 30-29 at the halftime break. Adams Central would outscore Northwest in the 2nd 18-13. The Vikings would then win the next two quarters to pull out the win going 15-13 in the 3rd and 18-17 in the 4th. Northwest would have their biggest lead in the 3rd quarter with 4:50 remaining after a Jaden Brandt three-pointer and a reverse layup by Brandon Bykerk. The lead was short-lived as Adams Central would trim the Viking lead to one at the end of the 3rd, 44-43.

 It would be game on in the fourth quarter. The game would tied at 49, 51, 53, 55, and with 1:18 left the last tie would be at 57 all. Free throws down the stretch would give Northwest a 61-57 lead with 12.3 remaining. Adams Central would then get a three-pointer from JJ Foster with 1.1 remaining to make it 61-60 Vikings. Sam Dinkelman would then go one-for-one at the line. The senior's second free throw attempt would bounce off the rim with the clock running on contact to expire the clock and give the Vikings the win. Northwest would have four players score in double digits. Brandon Bykerk would lead the charge with 16 points. Cam Walker would have 13 points, Dawson Urbanski chipped in 12 points, and Jaden Brandt added 10 points. Northwest with the win moves to 9-4. It was only the 3rd win in the last 10 meetings for the Vikings over Adams Central. Northwest defeated the Patriots 43-29 in 2023 and won 72-54 in 2018. Adams Central is now 7-5 on the season and next play on Saturday, January 18th at Doniphan Trumbull. 

Both Viking teams are back in action on Tuesday, January 21st hosting North Platte. Both games will air live on 103.1 FM & 2dayfm1031.com. Girls game will start at 6:00 pm and the boys game follows at 7:30 pm.
