GIPR Awarded 9 Free Trees From Nebraska Statewide Arboretum

Grand Island, Neb. — The Grand Island Parks & Recreation Department is happy to announce that George Park will be the home to nine new trees.

The Nebraska Statewide Arboretum selected Grand Island as a grant recipient for the trees, which will be planted on Sunday, September 29 from 1-3 p.m. The free trees are part of a collaborative effort of the Nebraska Forest Service and Nebraska Statewide Arboretum to help celebrate and enable the planting of trees in fall, which is the best time of the year to plant trees.

“The addition of these nine trees continues to strengthen our mission as a ‘Tree City USA’ city,” Parks & Recreation Director Todd McCoy said. “Receiving these trees gives us another opportunity to not only celebrate trees, but promote the value of healthy trees for a healthy community.”

The nine trees being planted in Grand Island come from a total of 500 trees that are being planted across the state of Nebraska. There is also an emphasis being placed on a diversity of large-maturing trees that will be expected to grow more than 40 feet tall. The “Free Trees for Fall Planting Program” provides trees with support from the Nebraska Environmental Trust and the U.S. Forest Service.
