Creighton Softball Closes The Weekend With A Win

KENNESAW, Ga. – Sophomore Sydney Potter went 3-for-4 with two doubles and a pair of RBI, guiding the Creighton softball team to a 6-2 win over Morehead State in the finale of the Kennesaw State Tournament on Sunday morning.
The Bluejays improved to 7-3 on the year with their fourth win in three days, while Morehead State fell to 1-9 with the loss.
The Eagles struck first with a run in the top of the second inning. A leadoff walk by Taikibrea Campbell set the table for Jordan Donato, who lined an RBI single through the right side to put Morehead State out in front 1-0.
Creighton responded with two runs in the bottom half of the third to take a 2-1 lead. Sophomore Lynn Davis led off the frame with a single to left, before a throwing error by the Eagles put runners on second and third with no outs. Senior Sydra Seville then drove in the first run of the game, reaching on a fielder’s choice, before an RBI single from Potter gave Creighton a 2-1 advantage.
After a scoreless fourth inning, the Bluejays surged out to a 6-1 lead, plating four runs in the bottom of the fifth. Graduate Hannah Poole opened the inning with a single, before Potter delivered an RBI double into the left center field gap to make the score 3-1. Following a walk by redshirt freshman Kenzie Nakasawa, junior Erika Perez laced a two-run double of her own to extend the Jays lead out to 5-1. Seville then capped off the inning with an RBI single through the left side, giving CU a 6-1 advantage.
Morehead State struck again in the top of the sixth on doubles by Ilencia Lightbody and Campbell to close within 6-2 but lights out pitching from Brooklyn Patchen and Abby Rusher secured the win for the Bluejays.
Nine different Bluejays collected a hit in the win, led by Potter with three base knocks, including a pair of doubles. Perez added in a double of her own and a pair of RBI. Patchen recorded the win, striking out four in 6.0 innings of work.
Creighton return to action next week at the San Marcos Classic hosted by Texas State. The Bluejays will play five games in three days, beginning on Friday morning at 11 a.m. against Kansas.
