Bestselling Author Shares Story of Abuse–Oct. 15

GRAND ISLAND–Willow Rising, in partnership with CHI Health and AmeriCorps, will host Janine Latus, international bestselling author of “If I Am Missing or Dead: A Sister's Story of Love, Murder and Liberation,” on Tues., Oct. 15 in Grand Island. Latus’ memoir of domestic abuse depicts two life journeys: Janine's own escape from a violent boyfriend and her sister's tragic death at the hands of one.

Two free presentations are planned--one designed specifically for healthcare professionals, the other for the general public. Both presentations will provide tools to identify abuse and help break the cycle.

The first session open to community healthcare professionals is scheduled for 3 to 4 p.m. at CHI Health St. Francis, 2620 W. Faidley Ave. Guests should use the main entrance and staff will direct them to the event room.

Latus will talk about the hidden signs of abuse that often go unnoticed. Attendees will hear about practical tools to identify non-physical abuse and enhance their role in patient care. There are only 60 spots available. RSVP to tsawyer@willowrising.org to ensure a seat.

The second session open to the general public is scheduled for 6 to 7 p.m. at Peace Lutheran Church, 1710 North Rd.

Latus will share her story to help everyone recognize the hidden signs of abuse. Whether you're seeking to support others or protect yourself, this free event is for everyone.

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. The community is encouraged to wear purple on Oct. 22 as a symbol of peace, courage, survival, honor and personal dedication to domestic violence awareness.
