Aurora BB Splits a Wild Double Header at Seward


The Aurora basketball teams split games at Seward in the final contests before the Central Conference Tourney. Listen for post game interviews from Kelly Krueger and Kevin Asher below.

The Aurora girls were on the verge of getting blown out of the gym in the first half but made it a game in a 48-35 loss. Seward had a 22-4 lead and had forced 19 turnovers before the Huskies scored the final six points of the half. 

Trailing by 15, Aurora put together a 19-8 run to close the third and trailed only 33-29. But the Jays closed strong to win for the ninth time. Kaitlin Staehr came off the bench to score 11 to pace Aurora.

Aurora won a hard fought boys' game 47-43 in overtime.

Two offensively challenged teams battled through a rough first half. Aurora and Seward combined to shoot 15 percent from the field as the Bluejays took a 10-9 lead to the locker room. 

Seward seemingly took command and led 30-22 midway through the fourth. But the Huskies closed regulation on a 16-8 run. Cannon Allen's driving shot in the lane tied the game with six seconds to go. He was fouled, but missed a go ahead free throw.

In the extra period, Aurora took the lead for the first time since the first half on a Ryan Staehr three pointer with under two minutes to go. He later picked off a steal and sealed the game with two free throws in the final 10 seconds.

Allen finished with 15. Staehr and Booker Scheierman scored 12 each.
